Meet Our 2020-2021 Leadership Team
Jessi has been a homeschooling mama for 8 years, prior to that she taught pre-K in her home state of Indiana. When she’s not creating her own curriculum, making plans, checking things off a list, or color-coding something, she can likely be found in her kitchen creating some new dish. She may not be able to craft things in the classroom, but give her a knife and veggies and she’ll craft something delicious. She desires to consistently teach her children by facilitating their learning and engaging with them and the world at large. Homeschooling has been a gift, but being part of LIGHT Katy Co-op is like the icing on the cake. She is thrilled to be part of the board for 2020-2021 and hopes to help LIGHT Katy Co-op be the icing on your cake too.
Elizabeth and her family were called to homeschooling from the time their children (one son (9) and 3 daughters (7, 5, 2)) were young. They have been a home educating family for 6 years, starting when her oldest was just a preschooler. She is passionate about her family and raising her children in God's truth and love. As a family, they also live and serve within the American Deaf community with her husband (a CODA raised by 2 Deaf parents) serving as a pastor at a local Deaf church. Elizabeth got her Masters of Arts degree in Deaf Studies/Cultural Studies from Gallaudet University in 2005 and loves incorporating what she learned/is learning about humanity, diversity, language, human justice, and culture into their home and life-long learning journey. Elizabeth also works part-time as a certified American Sign Language interpreter in the Houston area.
As a home educator, Elizabeth loves a more eclectic approach and has fallen in love with unit studies and creative learning opportunities that include God's truth and His Word. When not spending time with her children and husband, she also enjoys coffee, organizing, writing, technology, reading, meal planning and prep (Trim Healthy Mama!), and home finances (Dave Ramsey!). One of her favorite things is spending quality time with friends sharing life, prayer, and God's work in and around them. After having 3 babies born straight into the arms of Jesus, God also lead her to serve with an organization called Hope Mommies, which ministers to mothers/families that have lost babies due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss. Her family has been a part of LIGHT for the past year, having moved to Katy in early 2019. The people and community that LIGHT Enrichment has given her family has been an answered prayer as they make their home in West Houston. She is excited about the opportunity to serve and encourage this community and fellow homeschooling families as we learn and grow together.
Christy is looking forward to an exciting year serving as secretary for the LIGHT organization. She has been a member of Light for 5 years, four of those with Enrichment. Christy has served the past two years as the program’s preschool coordinator where she has taught classes such as Preschool Phonics,
Exploring Science for Kindergarten and Play-doh & Other Squishy Stuff.
Christy loves coffee, travel and Chris, her astonishingly patient and supportive husband! Together they have three wonderful girls ages 11, 8 and 5. Christy has been homeschooling for six years and wouldn’t trade a single crazy, chaotic minute of it! She is also a member of Westland Baptist Church where she
volunteers with preschoolers and works as a child wrangler each year as she directs the church's Christmas play.
Christy is honored to have this year of personal growth as she partners with the dynamic women of this board who have a heart for God and for this homeschooling community.
Dana has been homeschooling her son and daughter for the last 6 years. She loves the flexibility and adaptable environment that homeschooling affords their busy family. They enjoy being active together and pursuing interests like diving, musical theatre, and summer swim league.
As a social member of LIGHT since 2015, and an enrichment member since 2016, Dana is grateful for the community she has found here. She loves organizing math contests, and has served in several roles during her tenure including: church liaison, member care coordinator and MNO planner. Dana has also been a proctor for standardized testing and enjoys being the assistant director for the theatre group. For the 2020-2021 academic year she is looking forward to serving as our treasurer for the 2nd year. She is excited for another great year at LIGHT!
Sarah and her husband felt the pull to homeschool from the time their oldest was two years old. Eight years later, she is still content to be teaching and learning with her three kids (ages 10, 8, and 5). Her homeschool style leans toward Charlotte Mason, with a dash of everything else thrown in just to keep things interesting. She considers herself extraordinarily blessed to be able to watch her children learn and grow together in their faith and education at home. Their whole family has been blessed by the many friendships formed through LIGHT.
Sarah is a native Houstonian and spends as much time with her family as possible. She is a member of Memorial Lutheran Houston, where she serves on the Altar Guild with her mom and teaches Sunday School with her sister and niece. She spends most of her free time cross-stitching and listening to podcasts and audiobooks (while cross-stitching). She loves coffee, stretchy pants, grocery pickup, and nature walks. Sarah is excited to serve on the LIGHT Board and help shape the future for this wonderful group!
Rachel is a homeschooling newbie mom to her 4 and 6 year old boys. Having a husband who works weekends at church made homeschooling the perfect option for getting plenty of family time throughout the week.
She loves being able to tailor school to her boys’ unique learning style, and the fun of going down a learning rabbit hole when they’re really interested in a certain topic.
Raised in the UK as a missionary kid, Rachel and her family moved to Houston 3 years ago, which means she makes a mean cup of British tea but you may also overhear her boys mispronouncing words like “garage,” regularly.
With her background in nutrition, she’s pretty nutty about staying healthy so when she isn’t keeping fit by chasing after her boys, she enjoys reading about all things health food and figuring out new ways to hide more veggies in her family’s meals.
She has appreciated finding community here at LIGHT, and is grateful to be involved in planning ways to inspire our children in Enrichment classes, and create fun ways for them to learn.
